STOP procrastinating and Eat That Frog!

That’s right, you heard it! Eat. That. Frog….. STOP the procrastinating!

This post is based on the book by Brian Tracy, “Eat That Frog”. 21 great ways to stop procrastinating and get more done in less time.

Most people are over-whelmed with too much to do and too little time. It can be such a struggle to get caught up!  It seems like there is always something new to add to your schedule! Because of this, you will never be 100% caught up. For this reason, you need to select your most important task at each moment. Then complete it before going on to the next thing.

It has been said for many years that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go throughout the day knowing that that is the worst thing that will happen to you all day long! haha

Your “frog” is your biggest, most important task, the one you are most likely to find yourself procrastinating on if you don’t do it NOW!  It’s also the one task that can have the greatest positive impact on your life and results at the moment.

It has also been said, “if you have two frogs, eat the ugliest one first! haha

That is the biggest lesson in Brian Tracy’s book. I could end this post now, and you could go away from it, and see more positive results in your day, by applying it.  But since there are 21 other suggestions to stop procrastinating, I am going to give you just a couple more tips!

Have clarity! Be absolutely clear about your goal and objective for the day. The more clear you are about what you want and what you have to do to achieve it, the easier it is for you to overcome the habit of procrastinating.

~Here’s a great rule for success: Think On Paper.~

Apply the 80/20 rule. This rule says, 20% of your activities will account for 80% of your results. If you have a list of 10 things to do, two of those things will turn out to be worth as much or more that the other eight things combined! Before you begin your work, ask yourself if what you’re about to do is in the top 20%, or the bottom 80%?

Another way to decide what your “frog” of the day is, is to consider which item on your “to do list” would have the biggest consequences if you didn’t get it done.  Remember that long-term thinking improves short-term decision making.

Be self-motivated! Don’t wait for someone to come along and motivate you to become the kind of person you wish to be. Develop good “self talk” to motivate you. Be optimistic and positive in the way you talk to yourself. And develop a sense of urgency in your attitude.

A major reason for procrastinating on big, important tasks is that they seem so BIG when you first approach them. There is an old saying: “By the yard it’s hard, by the inch it’s a cinch”! And Confucius wrote “A journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step”. One of the best ways to overcome procrastinating is for you to get your mind off the huge task, and focus on a single action that you can take. Eat that frog just one bite at a time! :)

Practice the ABCDE method everyday. This method is a powerful priority-setting technique.  It is so simple and effective. Start with a list of everything you have to do in a given day. Then you place an ABCD or E next to the item on your list. And it goes like this:

A – An item that is something you must do or face serious consequences. These items are the frogs. If you have more than one A item then name them A-1, A-2, A-3, and so on. A-1 is your ugliest frog!

B – It’s defined as a task that you should do. It has only mild consequences. These items are the tadpoles in your life. Never do a “B” task when there is an “A” task left undone.

C – This is something that would be nice to do, with no consequences whether you do it or not.

D – This is something you can delegate to someone else. You should delegate everything that anyone else can do so that your time is spent working on your “A” tasks that only you can do.

E – An “E” task you can eliminate all together and it really won’t make any difference! Whewww! I love eliminating stuff from my to do list!

The key to making this method work for you is to discipline yourself to start immediately on your “A-1? task and then stay at it until it’s DONE! Take immediate, massive action – NO procrastinating!

Well there you go! There are so many subjects from the book that I didn’t even touch! Like….The six “P” formula, LISTS, the 10/90 rule, goal setting, creative procrastinating, slice & dice, and more detail on the ABCDE method! It’s really worth reading the book!

Two other books that I recommend from Brian Tracey is Mastering your time, and Maximum achievement.
