10 Ways to Make Someone's Day

We’ve all heard the saying “It’s better to give than to receive.”

By reading a great book entitled Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann, I learned that giving must start the process of receiving in business, just as in any other area of life.

Recently, I heard acclaimed author, T. Harv Eker (Secrets to the Millionaire Mind) say that the more accurate explanation of the above statement is  this:

“It is better to be in a position to give, than in the position to receive.”

Giving can come from a heart full to overflowing, or as a simple act of faith.  By this, you are always in a position to give something to someone.   Very few human beings want to always be in a position to receive alone.  This robs self respect and purpose for one’s life.

The form of the gift is not the issue, it’s the act that does.

In a previous article, I transcribed an interview Bob Burg did for Mentoring for Free.  In this interview, he expanded and gave some more practical ideas of how to take the five laws of stratospheric success and put them into every day actions.

So, giving comes more naturally at times for people when their heart is full to overflowing.  However, the act can be a seed of faith, knowing that by putting a log into the fireplace, a fire is sure to ensue with the right time and instigation.

Here are some simple suggestions that could create a flood of receiving in your life.  I find creative ways to give, often when my heart is overflowing, many times as a seed of faith for the return for my own need.

10 Ways to Brighten Someone’s  Day:

1.       When you dine out, and feel you have received great service, ask to speak to the manager.  Tell the manager how much you appreciate the great service the server gave you, suggest they get a raise because of the way they treat the restaurant’s most valuable asset … YOU! 

P.S.  Don’t forget to leave a big tip too.

2.       Let someone go ahead of you in the grocery store checkout line.  Do this especially when the store is busy and lots of people are in a hurry.

3.       Pay for someone’s gas at the gas pump, with the reasoning being it makes your day to do it for the person.

4.       Mow your neighbor’s front yard while they are at work.

5.       Give a tip to the hairdresser that is more than the fee.

6.       Praise someone for a job well done! 

7.       Tell the harried Wal-Mart clerk how much you appreciate what they do.

8.       Actually tell the people in your life how much you care for and appreciate them, despite the fact that you figure they should know it. (Bosses and coworkers included.)

9.       Let someone in when traffic is heavy.

10.   Determine to listen only, and not respond, in a conversation.  This is always a hard one for me because I always seem to have lots to say.  J

These are just some of the examples I do regularly.  It keeps me in giver mode with no agenda.  You see, giving is the planting part.  Giving without an agenda simply means that you do not expect a return necessarily from the person you are giving TO, but you know as surely as the sun will rise that if you are open, an abundance of blessings will shower down on you when you simply be open to receive it.  Sometimes, I admit though, it’s like a sudden rain storrn that you were not expecting too.
