What It Takes To Become A Leader

Do you get frustrated at work or at home because nothing ever gets accomplished? Do you feel that the goals you set remain stationary, and there is no movement in your life? Most people are content to play follow the leader and do nothing, but at the same time you have a bigger desire to push things along faster than others. Then maybe it's time you stood up, did something about it and became a leader.

There is a famous saying that goes, "great leaders are made, not born." So maybe it's your time to lead rather than follow. Some people just have a natural ability to lead, having drive, ambition, enthusiasm and other typical leadership qualities right from the start. Those people seem to stand out immediately from others, even as early as grade school. Other leaders are developed over time, learning to be assertive, gaining confidence over the years, and becoming more in tune with what they want from life.

But even the natural born leaders are always working to improve their skills and learning more and more each day. To be a leader, you must be influential with others to be able to reach goals and accomplish objectives you set. It's not all about having power. Leadership doesn't rule successfully by using fear and harassing people to get the job done. Leadership is about encouraging the people around you, and lifting them with positive messages and exact direction towards your common objective. Therefore, you don't want to be a boss, you want to be a leader.

Make sure as a leader you show direction and have a clear sense of purpose. Otherwise, people will not follow anyone that does not have direction and purpose. If you don't know where you are going, then how will they? Building trust with your team is a huge step towards strengthening their confidence in you. If they don't trust you, they will not follow you. Build their trust on developing good relationships not only between you and your team, but also between team mates. Cohesion among the team creates unity and harmony, which is essential to completing goals.

Keep in mind, being a leader is something you don't learn overnight. It takes a lot of work and development to reach your leadership potential. Don't forget that great leaders are recognized by the team they develop, because it's not only about you, it's about the people you develop around you.
