You Want Security...But At What Cost?

Hey, I just read through Why We Want You To Be Rich by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki (author of Rich Dad Poor Dad).  It is a great book and I would definitely recommend you picking up your own copy…and reading it too, of course!

There was one part that is especially true for internet and network marketers.

In this section, they discussed the idea of security and how it relates to business and success.  It was one of the most poignant points I’ve heard in quite a while.

Basically, they said, business is not about security, rather it’s about freedom.

If you’ve started your current business or you are in the process of finding the right business for you, DON’T start because you want security, because you certainly won’t find it in your own business!  I think this is a subtle point that most people miss.  Many people join a network marketing company, they picture themselves earning a huge income and having the trappings of success, and they falsely equate that to security.

And what usually happens?  They get going, follow the initial advice of their sponsor, and soon they begin to see the rough road ahead of them if they’re going to achieve what they wanted.  At some point down the road, usually fairly soon, the typical network marketer starts to realize they’re working pretty hard and putting in a lot of time, but they are not making much income to show for it.  And it’s at the moment that the questions and doubt start building…

“Is it worth all this?”  “Am I really getting anywhere?” And so on.

The answer is definitely YES!, but most miss this.  They view their business through the eyes of an employee, and they equate time to money, realizing that they are putting a lot in for just a little return.  They get depressed and eventually give up and quit.  It’s a shame, but it happens every single day.  It’s certainly not because network marketing doesn’t offer way more than a j.o.b. (just over broke), but because of the employee mentality they apply to their business, which is wrong.

A job offers a certain sense of security…you put in x amount of time, you get paid x amount of dollars.  If that’s what you’re after then your own business certainly isn’t for you.

Here’s how my friend Daegan Smith put it:

“If security is your goal, here’s how to guarantee yourself ultimate security.  Trot down to your neighborhood store and rob the place, but make sure you get caught.  Do this and you secure your future.

You’ll never have to pay for lodging and you’ll never have to worry about where money for your next meal is coming from.

At what cost?

Jail is the ultimate in security but there is no FREEDOM to be found there.”

This example is extreme, but realize that the J.O.B. world is really no different!  You give up freedom for the security of a consistent, predictably recurring paycheck.  Network marketing (and internet marketing) on the other hand, offers you freedom but guarantees you no security.

Which would you choose in the grand scheme of life?

A friend of mine, not too long ago, maybe six months or so ago told me, “You know, I could never do what you do, I wouldn’t know from day to day how much, if any, money I would make that day (week, month, etc).”  Well, guess what happened just a couple months later…yep, his company had layoff’s and he was one of the lucky ones.  That’s how secure even that security is today!

Business, and more specifically, your network marketing business is a fight and a risk, but a worthwhile one.  It’s to those that realize what freedom means to them who press on despite the initial outcome and win the prize.  So, I guess I would urge you to think about what your business REALLY means to you…

I know what it means to me, and it’s a fight you won’t see me retreat from!
